What is a Thrive Education Zone (TEZ)?
A Thrive Education Zone is a specialist, small-group nurture base designed for children with significant social and emotional needs. TEZs can serve a cluster of schools or operate within a single school setting as part of its inclusive provision.
Using an evidence-based framework for supporting children’s emotional development e.g. Hamish & Milo Wellbeing Resources, TEZs assess each child’s social and emotional profile and create bespoke action plans. These personalised programmes address emotional need first — enabling children to feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.
Drawing on nurture principles, attachment theory, and trauma-informed practice, TEZs respond to children’s emotional behaviours through connection, relationship, and co-regulation. The focus is not on managing behaviour, but on understanding and transforming it.
How the TEZ Model Works
Each TEZ provides short-term, intensive intervention for up to two school terms.
- Children attend the TEZ for three days a week, where they receive targeted relational and emotional support.
- The remaining two days are spent in their home school or home class base, supported by the TEZ teacher and a TEZ child and family mentor to ensure consistency and successful reintegration.
This dual placement approach maintains strong links with the child’s home school or class base, reducing the sense of separation and helping each child transfer new skills and confidence back into their mainstream classroom.
Partnership and Outreach
Beyond direct work with children, the TEZ model provides consultation, outreach, and professional support to the schools within its cluster. TEZ staff work closely with SENCOs, teachers, and support staff, offering guidance and training to embed nurturing, trauma-informed practice across settings.
Multi-agency collaboration is central to the TEZ ethos. Teachers and mentors work alongside health, social care, and education professionals, ensuring that children and families receive joined-up, holistic support.
Family and Community Engagement
A unique and vital feature of the TEZ model is its deep commitment to family partnership.
Home liaison, outreach work, and parent/carer workshops such as Hamish & Milo Families Together are integral to the provision, helping families understand their child’s emotional needs and develop consistent strategies for support.
By nurturing relationships with families, the TEZ strengthens the bridge between home and school, creating the best possible outcomes for children.
